The Bitterroot Discovery Children’s Museum is being created as a welcoming, hands-on space where children and their caregivers can learn, play, and grow together. With exhibits and programs designed around the needs of early learners and their trusted adults, we aim to teach through discovery and the power of play!
While early childhood development is our primary focus, the museum will be a welcoming place for all ages. We're creating an inclusive space that supports families and learners of all abilities while inspiring connection and community togetherness.
Our future facility will include themed exhibit rooms filled with immersive, educational experiences designed to encourage exploration in topics like science, art, history, and wellness—layered in ways that allow for learning at all levels of development. Resources throughout the museum will help adults engage with children as active learning partners, strengthening relationships and building valuable life skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and emotional resilience.
Beyond the exhibit rooms, the museum will feature flexible spaces designed for use as classrooms, party rooms, meetings, and civic gatherings. Weekly volunteer-led programs like story time, art, music and movement, STEM/tinkering, and citizenship classes, as well as seasonal celebrations and community events, are other exciting elements we’re bringing to the Bitterroot!
This is our community’s museum, and we want everyone to join the fun as we work to create joyful traditions and lasting memories. Help us create joyful moments that also serve as powerful prevention—connecting children to trusted adults, enriching experiences, and a positive community culture.
The mission of the Bitterroot Discovery Children's Museum is to provide a nurturing environment for children and their caregivers where they can explore the world through exhibits and programming rooted in hands-on discovery and the power of play.
The vision of the Bitterroot Discovery Children's Museum is to be a resource dedicated to supporting all children, their families, and their community by creating a welcoming space for meaningful experiences, memorable connections, and learning through discovery.
We respect children and their caregivers, striving to understand and support everyone in our community.
We believe play is vital for healthy development and can change the world.
We recognize families as children’s first teachers and focus on empowering them in all their unique forms.
We value diverse cultures, celebrate community, and seek new ways to grow while honoring our roots.
Play is how children learn best. It helps them explore the world, build confidence, and grow important life skills like sharing, solving problems, and expressing themselves. Through play, kids discover what they enjoy and what they’re good at.
Research shows that 90% of brain development happens before age five—and play is a key part of that growth. It supports learning in all areas: thinking, moving, feeling, and getting along with others.
Playtime is also a powerful way for parents and caregivers to bond with their children. When adults join in play, it sends the message: "You matter to me." These shared moments help build strong, trusting relationships.
Sadly, opportunities for free and creative play are disappearing. Busy schedules, pressure to focus on academics, and too much screen time are getting in the way. That’s why it’s more important than ever to protect play as a vital part of healthy childhood development.
Children’s Museums are more than fun—they’re an investment in families and communities. Discovery museums bring learning to life, support schools, and build partnerships with youth programs, nonprofits, and local businesses.
In the Bitterroot Valley, we’re lucky to have natural beauty, outdoor activities, strong agriculture, and a vibrant arts scene. Yet many families face economic hardship and limited access to affordable learning. While some programs exist, there’s no consistent, accessible space for hands-on discovery.
We believe every child deserves to grow, play, and explore—no matter their income, ability, or background. Accessibility is central to our mission, ensuring all families feel welcome through inclusive exhibits and equitable admission policies. We’re dedicated to removing barriers so every child and caregiver can thrive.
